The project foresees the building of a metro connection between Noida and Greater Noida in order to give people access to reliable travel and encouraging them to travel in towns outside the city center. At the same time, it is to avoid the area to be overcrowded.

The construction project is undertaken by the Noida Metro Rail Corporation. The governments of India in a joint venture with Uttar Pradesh manage the project.
Many direct and indirect jobs are to be created during the construction and operation phases.
