Phase One of Canadian Bus Transit Lane project ongoing in Calgary

The 17 Avenue S.E BRT project is part of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) program carried out by the City of Calgary.

PUBLICITÉ
It is divided in two phases among which the first is in construction.

The first phase covers the 28 Street S.E. and Hubalta Road sections.
It comprises the building of dedicated bus lanes and new BRT stations including canopies for shelter, enhanced lighting, real time travel information and heated waiting areas. As part of the project, infrastructures on 17 Avenue S.E are to be revitalized such as boulevards, landscaping and sidewalks that have to be widened.

The phase one of the project is worth $96M.

Calgary’s BRT program aims to reduce travel times as well as increase reliability on transportation to and through the Southeast.

The phase two of the project will run between 28 Street S.E. and 9 Avenue S.E with the main objective to expand the 17 Avenue S.E BRT closer to downtown.
It partly includes the designing and building of dedicated bus lanes, bridge structures, new BRT stations as well as the creation of pedestrian and cyclist connections.

Completion of the two phases are scheduled for 2018.

The total BRT program budget is estimated at $208M.
