Ex-highway transformed into public pedestrian space in South Korea
On May 20, Seoullo 7017, a new urban garden has opened in the capital city above the Seoul station.

Seoullo 7017 replaces a previous 938 meters elevated highway built in 1970. It stands as a proper ‘sky garden’ featuring up to 24,000 trees, shrubs and flowers.

The new space has been designed by Rotterdam-based architecture agency, MVRDV.

Winy Maas, MVRDV co-founder, said: “Sky garden offers a living dictionary of plants which are part of the natural heritage of South Korea”.

Seoullo 7017 runs above the Seoul station and connects Namdaemun Market with the neighborhoods of Malli-dong, Jungnim-dong, and Cheongpa-dong.

As part of the project, new bridges and stairs have been created to link the viaduct with hotels, shops and gardens.

The project would have cost around $40M.
