Pumped storage hydroelectric plant inaugurated in Switzerland

The Forces Montrices Hongrin-Leman (FMHL) expansion project has met completion and was inaugurated, on May 11, in the city of Veytaux.

Two new 120MW turbines have been added to the plant which has now a capacity of 480MW. The FMHL stands as the second-largest pumped storage plant in Switzerland.

Benoit Revaz, director of the Swiss Federal Office of Energy commented: “Switzerland is fortunate to have a powerful hydroelectric infrastructure that enables it to take up the challenge of efficiently integrating intermittent energies into its energy system.”

The FMHL is to generate 1bn KW/h every year, being the consumption of near 300,000 households.

The project cost is $328.7M divided in four partners that are Romande Energie with a 41.14% share, Alpiq with 32.29%, Groupe E and the city of Lausanne with 13.14% and 6.43% shares respectively.
