Major upgrading road project to come in Dubai
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has unveiled on April 29 its $218M plan to enhance the Latifa Bint Hamdan Street and the Junction of Umm Al-Sheef-Latifa Bint Hamdan Streets.

The project is separated in two distinct contracts. The first has been awarded to China State Company and comprises the construction of Latifa Bint Hamdan Street and Umm Al-Sheef Street from Al-Safa Interchange to Al-Manara Interchange on the Sheikh Zayed Road. It is expected to link Jumeirah with Al Khail Road and parallel roads by means of two-level roads and bridges; the latter to be built above and underneath the Dubai Metro Red Line route. The bridges would allow free exits and thus assure a better traffic flow.

The Saudi Arabian National Contracting Company has won the second contract that anticipates enhancements concerning the connection between SZR & Al-Khail Rd and Jumeirah to the west and DubaiLand to the east as well as Al Quoz entrances.

Mattar Al Tayer, chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at the RTA explained: “Improvement works will also extend to the intersection of Al Asayel-Latifa Bint Hamdan Streets to transform it from a surface signalized junction into a multi-level interchange. The surface intersection will be upgraded to reduce the waiting time from three minutes to less than one minute; which will alleviate the congestion by 78% during evening peak hours and enhance the capacity of the intersection by 40%.”

As referred in the first contract, the first stage of the project is to meet completion in the first half of 2018 while construction works under the second contract are scheduled for early 2019.
