Al Wasl Plaza : Icing on the cake for Dubai Expo 2020

Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture is designing the last major element before the start of the Expo 2020 to be held in Dubai on October 20.

Al Wasl Plaza is to stand as an open space which combines innovative technology and a 65-meter high intricate domed trellis. It is to be developed alongside the themed pavilions at the Expo site.

Reem Al Hashimy, UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation and Director General, Dubai Expo 2020 Bureau, declared: "Memorable moments are framed by memorable spaces. Al Wasl Plaza will be an inspirational location, exemplifying local culture and family values while also looking to the future. It is also the last major design element of the Expo site to be finalized. We look forward to watching the plaza develop alongside the rest of Expo 2020 Dubai."

Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture is in charge of designing Al Wasl Plaza. It takes inspiration from the Expo 2020 logo’s shape to conceive the trellis.

Gordon Gill, Design Partner at Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture, said: "We are creating a space that will be an architectural landmark not just for the six months of Expo but long into the future. We want Al Wasl Plaza, with its cutting-edge design, to inspire not just our generation but many generations to come."

The construction is to start this month for a completion in 2019.

The Expo 2020 will last from October 2020 until April 2021.
