India plans to construct ten nuclear reactors
On May 17, the Indian Union cabinet has approved proposal to build ten additional pressurized heavy water reactors (PHWR) to increase nuclear power generation capacity.

India currently benefits from a 6780MW installed nuclear power capacity being generated by twenty-two plants.
In order to increase its capacity by 7000MW, the government has decided to construct ten 700MW PHWRs.
This project would come in addition to others presently under construction and that foresee 6700MW nuclear power to come on-stream by 2021.

The ten new reactors are to be built in ‘fleet mode’ to maximize cost and time. The project is planned to create 33,400 direct and indirect jobs.

An Indian government statement said: "With likely manufacturing orders of close to 70,000 crore to the domestic industry, the project will help transform Indian nuclear industry by linking our goal of a strong nuclear power sector with our indigenous industrial capacities in high-end technologies."
