Thyssenkrupp to provide escalators for Baku Metro in Azerbaijan

The German based diversified industrial group has been awarded public contract to supply escalators for the South Caucasus country’s Baku Metro within three years.

The tenders won by Thyssenkrupp consist of supplying eight high-rise escalators for Sahil and Khatai stations as well as other seventeen moving staircases for a new metro stop.

Thyssenkrupp Elevator’s CEO, Andreas Schierenbeck commented: “In supplying our advanced mobility solutions to Baku Metro, Thyssenkrupp Elevator can increase the metro stations’ capacity by as much as 30% and ensure efficient passenger flow of around 222 million commuters each and every year. This is a significant improvement, and we are proud to provide this support as Baku continues its journey to become an efficient and future-proof city.”

The four escalators designed to the Khatai station are to be the highest units ever manufactured by the company in Germany with a height of 48.7m.

Besides, the models to be used at the Baku Metro are expected to be narrower than previous units because the drive (motor and gears) are installed deep in front of the structure instead of in the stairs’ supports as usual. This innovation would allow more users at the same time going up or down and increase the escalators’ capacity in the shafts by up to 50%.
