Asian Development Bank co-finances Georgia’s Batumi Bypass project

The development infrastructure road plan to improve Georgian traffic conditions is co-funded by ADB and Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB).

Batumi Bypass Road project cost is estimated at $315M. On March 31, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has announced $114M loan for the project undertaking. The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) provides this additional financing.

ADB’s role is to find solutions in order to reduce poverty in Asia and the Pacific through inclusive economic growth, environmentally sustainable growth, and regional integration.

ADB Country Director in Georgia, Yesim Elhan-Kayalar said: “ADB is committed to play a seminal role in improving the country’s transport connectivity and the sustainability of its road network through this project.”

The Batumi Bypass project consists of two-lane East-West highway section building on 14, 3 km. It is to start from the Senaki-Poti-Sarpi road and end at Batumi-Akhaltsikhe juncture. It is to be a bypass to the Batumi port city.
As part of the project, nineteen bridge crossings, four transportation interchanges, five tunnels and fifty-seven culverts would be built.

Yesim Elhan-Kayalar added: “Georgia is well poised to become a stronger transport and logistics hub for the Caucasus region — something that could help propel the country’s growth and development.”

The construction should start in June 2017 and be completed by June 2023.
