Interchange project ongoing in Tanzania

The Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS) has signed a $1.77bn contract with China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) to develop road infrastructure in the Eastern Africa’s country.

Standing as the second phase of Dar es Salaam Urban Transport Improvement project, the creation of an interchange in the Tanzania’s business capital has been officially launched. It aims to improve traffic conditions in the Ubungo district.

In 2015, the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system first phase completion, financed by the World Bank Group, had already contributed to partly reduce traffic congestion and time journey.

The president of the World Bank Group, Jim Yong Kim said: ‘Ubungo interchange project is a good example… (it) will transform the lives of people in Dar es Salaam (who) have been spending a lot of time in jam…it is my hope that this project will be a solution”.

The Ubungo interchange project consists of overpasses construction in three levels. At the bottom lane would circulate vehicles on Morogoro Road. Traffic lights would direct cars on the second lane while the third is to be dedicated for vehicles passing along the Mandela and Sam Nujoma.

The global Dar es Salaam Urban Transport Improvement project cost is supported by $225 million concessional credit from the International Development Association (IDA) in addition to an IDA Scale-up Facility Credit of $200 million.
