The German and Dutch TenneT Transmission System Operators (TSO) with the Danish Energinet have agreed yesterday, at the North Seas Energy Forum in Brussels, on a cooperative treaty for the development of one or several electricity supply power link islands bound for Europe.

Netherlands, Denmark, Germany, the United Kingdom, Norway and Belgium are the countries concerned.
At the Dogger Bank in the North Sea, a central location for all these countries is expected to be created; a large artificial island which would act as a connection point for many wind farms.
Energinet’s Chief technology officer, Torben Glar Nielsen said: “Building one or more artificial islands in the middle of the North Sea sounds like a science fiction project, but it could actually be a very efficient and affordable way for the North Sea countries to meet the future demand for more renewable electricity,”
The feasibility and arranging processes of Power Link Island(s) have to be reviewed by the TSOs to attempt to ensure the project will be developed by 2035. They also plan to discuss with environmental organizations to highlight potential fauna and flora impacts.
The project cost is estimated at $2 billion and could generate a total capacity of 70.000 to 100.000MW.
