UK: more constructive prisons should generate 2,000 jobs in the building sector

Living conditions in jails have been a hot topic for a long time. But things should improve as the British Government will unveil plans for four new prisons today.

Prisons can no longer play their rehabilitation role. The situation is serious as they have turned places of violence. Inmate deaths and staff attacks skyrocket. These tensions are clearly attributable to prisoners’ conditions of life, which are getting worse, these spaces being totally overcrowded and unhealthy.

In order to tackle the problem, UK Government have launched a vast reform of the jail system. They have engaged in a £1.3 billion modernization project. No less than 10,000 prisons will be created by 2020. As part of this initiative, plans will be announced today regarding four sites that have been chosen specifically: Full Sutton in Yorkshire, Hindley in Wigan, Rochester in Kent and Port Talbot in South Wales.

Justice Secretary Elizabeth Truss is confident this will boost economy, creating hundreds of jobs for local people and opportunities for businesses.
