Denmark: Aarhus art museum at the heart of an ambitious project

The extension of the Aarhus Art Museum (ARoS Aarhus Art Museum), which represents an investment of 40 M €, is a project (named "Next Level") which was entrusted to Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects. The firm, supported by the American artist James Turrell, plans to realize the largest museum of art in the world.

The new museum that will result from this extension, Next Level, will include several new installations including a 1,200 m² underground gallery and a giant semi-buried "The Dome". The new extension will be connected to the existing building in order to make the museum a horizontal building in symbiosis with the natural flow of the city towards the river to Music Hall Square.

This extension will allow visitors to take a journey into a new dimension in color and light to a series of galleries and exhibition spaces extending nearly 120 m below the surface of the Dome. With its 40 m diameter and 9 m high, the latter will form one of the most spectacular spaces ever built in an art museum.
