CHINA : The green tower rises in the sky of Nanjing

China, one the most industrialized countries in the world has encountered unprecedented pollution problems in recent year, has appealed to an Italian architect Stefano Boeri based in Milan, to built the Green Towers or the Vertical Forest in Nanjing Pukou District.

Following the prototype of the green tower in Milan, the Nanjing Vertical Forest includes 2 towers characterizing by the interchange of green tanks and balconies with the facades of 600 tall trees, 500 medium and 2500 cascading plants and shrubs. The total area covered by the green plants is 6,000 square meters.

Nanjing green towers will be the first Vertical Forest built in Asia, and it will help to generate biodiversity providing thus a 25 tons of CO² absorption each year and producing 60 kg of oxygen per day.

The first tower with 200 meters high will host offices, museum, a green architecture school and the private club on the rooftop, the second tower with 108 meters high will host a prestigious hotel and a swimming pool on the rooftop. The podium with 20 meters high in the lower part of the two towers, will host commercial, recreational and educative functions .

Nanjing Vertical Forest project is the third prototype of a project about urban forestation and demineralization, after Milan and Lausanne. Some others projects in Chinese cities such as Shijazhuang, Liuzhou, Guizhou, Shanghai and Chongqing are under study by Stefano Boeri Architects.

The completion of the green towers is scheduled to be finished in 2018.
