Canada: Ontario’s hydroelectric plant in service

Since April 7, the Peter Sutherland Sr. Generating Station, located in the Canada province is operating.

The $300M Peter Sutherland Sr. Generating station project has been undertaken by the electricity company Ontario Power Generation (OPG) in partnership with the Taykwa Tagamou Nation (TTN) owned Coral Rapids corporation.

Ontario Energy Minister Glenn Thibeault said: “Ontario’s newest waterpower generation station further demonstrates our government’s commitment to building a clean and reliable electricity system. Not only will it help to support a healthier environment and cleaner air for today and future generations, this project highlights a partnership between Taykwa Tagamou Nation and OPG that delivered meaningful economic benefits to the local First Nation community.”

The hydroelectric generation facility is located within the traditional territory of TNN, at 80km north of the city Smooth Rock Falls near the junction of New Post Creek and the Abiti River.

Two turbines compose the plant. They use a portion of the water flowing down New Post Creek to generate electricity by moving water 250 meters through a penstock to the power house on the Abitibi River.

The two unit station generates 28MW electricity to the provincial grid and allows to power around 25,000 households.
