USA: Future Baltimore Tunnel layout is now unveiled
The US Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) has released, in March, its Record of Decision (ROD) for the Baltimore and Potomac (B&P) tunnel replacement, located in Maryland.

The Maryland’s B&P Tunnel is in service since 1873 but it would reach, within the next 10-20 years, the end of its useful service life due to its physical condition.

A replacement project is in progress and the FRA which has issued the ROD and the Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) has unveiled the structure type selected for the B&P tunnel change.

The double-track 1,4 mile current rail tunnel along the Northeast Corridor (NEC) is to be replaced with four one-track tunnels.

The B&P tunnel is owned by the American passenger railroad service corporation, Amtrak. It is everyday followed by Regional and Acela intercity trains, Maryland Area Rail Commuter trains and the NS freight trains.

Located between West Baltimore Marc Station and Penn Station, the B&P tunnel is a crucial link to the NEC which runs through eight states and Washington.

After completion, the new infrastructure should reduce travel time for passengers and consequently improve rail service on the NEC.

The project replacement cost has been reckoned at $4.52bn.
