Hong Kong: Liantang Tunnel Boring Machine closer to completion

At the beginning of March, the construction project takes a step forwards with the breakthrough of the southbound tube’s tunnel section by Hong Kong largest dual-mode Earth Pressure Balanced.

The Liantang / Heung Yuen Wai (LTHYW) border control point project is expected to be the seventh land-based crossing between Hong Kong and Shenzhen. It will reduce journey time between Hong Kong and Guangdong as well as between Fujian and Jiangxi provinces.

The 4,8km long Liantang tunnel that, is to be named Lung Shan, would stand after completion as the longest twin-tube road tunnel in Hong Kong. The Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) works for the southbound tube commenced in November 2015 and finished in approximatively 16 months.

The TBM have been equipped by Bouygues Construction’s subsidiary Draggages, with state-of-the-art innovations such as Mobydic, Telemach or Roby 850.

Chairman of Draggages Hong Kong said: “We are doing something unprecedented here. I know that my Dragages people have been working round the clock since the beginning of the project. With a very strong team spirit and persistency, they bring us here today.”
