The project design and construction plans to widen the West Gate Freeway from eight to twelve lanes. 2.8km eastbound tunnel is to be built and another 4km westbound tunnel under Yarraville.
To provide an alternative to the West Gate Bridge, a same type infrastructure construction is foreseen over the Maribyrnong River. Access to the Port of Melbourne would be improved with the building of an elevated road along Footscray as well as others city links. Pedestrians and cycles would also benefit from 14km new paths.

Executive General Manager at Victoria, Trevor Hall said: “The West Gate Tunnel Project will provide an alternative route to the West Gate Bridge and direct access to the port. In doing so, it will slash traffic congestion, improve productivity, remove numerous trucks from local roads and reduce travel times for motorists. We see this project as amazing opportunity to undertake significant industry training and also create many jobs in Victoria.”

Construction start is planned for 2018 with the completion objective in 2022.
