In Germany, Leipzig Central Station sees red
Leipzig Central Station in Saxony is one of the largest terminals in Europe. Its imposing hall is surmounted by a multi-tiered tile roof, received in 2016 a new cover of canal tiles (50,000 of current and 50,000 covers) manufactured by Erlus.

Since 1915, the station hall has undergone several repairs and the roof is no exception. It also had a curious mixture of tiles: old canal tiles of the sixties coexisted with specimens of Polish origin much more recent. This cover of about thirty years was largely damaged and had many defects caused by frost.

In 2012, the renewal of the coverage of the east and west halls (to be completed in early 2017) led to the installation of a new roof tile combining narrow canopy and roof tiles. Erlus tile manufacturer based on the renovation of the Landshut Seligenthal cloister, for which particularly narrow channel models had been manufactured and used.

To adhere to the particular shape of the roof, with slopes to 70%, Erlus has implemented a fixing to the battens reinforced by the installation of a nail. Securing the Mönch canal tile required the design of a specially developed stainless steel fastener for this project. During laying, the roofer pushes this fastener between the Nonne canal tiles and attaches this safety against the wind behind the battens. This assembly of tiles has a high resistance and is intended to be flexible and resistant to frost.

The completion of the renovation project is scheduled for early 2017. The roofs of the two halls will then carry a new canal tile roof in accordance to the historic model of 25,000 tiles of current and 25,000 of canal tiles.
