Port of Bamberg: Manitowoc rises to the top

Merkel Autokrane was responsible for lifting a port crane and loading it laterally on a ship in the port of Bamberg in Germany.

The port crane, weighing 92 t and 18 m in height, was placed on a 3.5 m quay wall. A configuration that limited the available space to allow another crane to lift it because it should have been positioned between the wharf wall and the Main-Danube canal. Since the radius of the crane was less than 10 m, it was not possible to use a crawler crane or mobile crane. The Grove GMK5250L has, however, been able to travel in tight spaces. Its compact dimensions and lifting capacity of 250 t have been combined with a second GMK5250L supplied by Augé GmbH in Würzburg.

The crane tandem was positioned directly to the right of the quay wall and to the left of the port crane. The GMK5250L from Merkel was equipped with a counterweight of 80 t to allow the lifting of 65 t. The Augé crane, for its part, was equipped with a counterweight of 70 t and was responsible for lifting the remaining 27 t (the chassis of the port crane). The two cranes had a boom length of 28.5 m and a lifting radius of 8 to 10 m.
