It will be one of the most prestigious concert halls in the world, thanks to its innovative architecture and exceptional acoustics, the Elbphilharmonie in Hamburg was realized by the Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron. A total of 63,000 cubic meters of concrete was delivered by a consortium led by the German subsidiary of LafargeHolcim, Holcim Deutschland. In addition, in order to meet the architects’ expectations, 30 concretes were tailor-made for this project. The building design required clear concrete, manufactured by LafargeHolcim using a dairy-based cement. Designed from high-quality round gravel and not from crushed stone, this concrete offers a good surface quality but also reduces dust formation and improves pumpability, particularly important for elements that exceed 100 meters. Other concretes have been designed to provide the strength, uniformity, setting properties and chemical resistance required for each part of this complex project, including building structural pillars made of high performance concrete. To ensure reliable delivery in a congested downtown area, LafargeHolcim installed a temporary concrete plant one kilometer from the site. Using state-of-the-art computer systems to control production and planning, deliveries were made 24 hours a day, including nights and weekends.
